One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Foliate Decoration, attributed William Nichols, Poughkeepsie, NY, circa 1823, ovoid jar with slightly-flared collar and applied lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a stylized, fan-shaped foliate design, the one side including X's. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Exceptional color. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. A short, minor hairline to base. A glazed-over 7/8" iron ping to one side. Minor base chips.
