Four-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Stenciled Rose Motif, Stenciled "JAS. HAMILTON & / CO. / GREENSBORO. PA.", circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with an elaborate stenciled rose motif above James Hamilton maker's stenciling. Base with stenciled "4" flanked by stenciling roses. Cobalt stripe below rim. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals and cobalt squiggle under one handle. A chip and some minor nicks to top of rim. A large sealed X-shaped crack on underside, which continues onto front, forming a 9" Y on left side of front, 2 1/2" up reverse, where it forms a second Y, and 1 1/2" up right side of front. Some very light exfoliation to surface.
