Unusual Small-Sized Vertical-Handled Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Decoration, Stamped "COMMERAWS / STONEWARE", Manhattan, NY origin, early 19th century, ovoid jar with footed base, tooled shoulder, and applied vertical handles, featuring the impressed and cobalt-highlighted signature, "COMMERAWS", on the front and "STONEWARE" on the reverse. This jar is unusual in its lack of impressed or incised compass decoration. The shoulder is decorated with very faint draped brushwork, missing in places, along with highlights to the handle terminals. Provenance: Property of a New York State collector. Two long cracks from rim, as well as a shorter, 3 1/2" long crack from rim. A short vertical line at base. A glazed-over area of chipping at base and a post-firing base chip. A small in-the-firing iron ping below the word "STONEWARE". H 8 1/2".
