Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "JOHN' B. CAIRE &. CO / MAIN ST / PO.KEEPSIE NY", circa 1840, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a flower with spotted center. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. A 5" hairline from rim on right side of crock's front. A 4" hairline from rim on reverse. An in-the-firing salt drip to rim on front. A few chips on interior of rim. A minor area of in-the-firing wear to rim. A few small base chips. A small piece of adhered clay at base on reverse. A 1 3/8" line at midsection on reverse, not visible on interior.
