Fine Two-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jug with Kaolin-Slip Floral Decoration, attributed to Collin Rhodes, Shaw's Creek, Edgefield, SC, circa 1850, highly-ovoid jug with tooled spout, the surface covered in an olive-colored alkaline glaze and decorated with a kaolin-slip design of a leafy stem bearing a fan-shaped blossom and daisy. Inscribed above with a kaolin-slip "2" for two gallons, surrounded by a floral medallion. Iron slip highlight brushed around each handle terminal. Appealing heavy glaze runs to reverse. Spout broken and reglued with a 1/2" hole at base of spout on side of jug. This damage includes a 3" hairline descending from spout on front. Otherwise excellent condition with two minor base chips. H 14".
