Four-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Grapes Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA", circa 1865, ovoid jug with semi-squared spout, decorated with a brushed design of a cluster of grapes hanging from a leafy stem, beside a twisted vine. Brushed cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Provenance: David Musser Collection. Two in-the-firing chips to bottom edge, measuring 1 3/4" and 1 1/8". A post-firing 1 3/4" chip to bottom edge. Some restoration to spout. Cobalt is raised and bubbled on the grapes decoration. A few in-the-firing pings to surface. H 16 1/4".
