Six-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Flower Basket Decoration, Stamped "WHITES UTICA", New York State origin, circa 1865, large-sized, cylindrical jar with rounded shoulder, semi-squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a basket brimming with flowers, leaves, and dotted trails. Lightly-brushed cobalt highlight to maker's mark and capacity mark. A long restored horizontal crack to base. An 11 1/2" crack on reverse, extending from base to terminal of one handle. A restored chip to same terminal. This damage includes a faint, unrestored 2" hairline emanating from the handle terminal on reverse. A 1 7/8" in-the-firing chipped section to rim. A 1" chip to top of one handle. A 1 1/4" in-the-firing surface chip to base on side of jar. Some water glass staining to surface.
