Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Elaborate Cobalt Bird and Butterfly Decoration, Stamped "NICHOLS & BOYNTON / BURLINGTON VT", circa 1856-1859, semi-ovoid jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a bird with raised wing and heavily-detailed body, perched on a stylized branch, attempting to eat a flying insect. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Provenance: Dr. Raymond L. Owen Collection. Some fry to cobalt. Base chips, which appear to be in-the-firing. A minor base flake on front, which is glazed-over.
