Rare Five-Gallon Stoneware Wine Cooler with Cobalt Grapes Decoration, Stamped "A.O. WHITTEMORE / HAVANA, N.Y.," circa 1870, squat-shaped, jug-form cooler with squared bung hole, applied lug handles, and solid clay finial, decorated with two bunches of slip-trailed cobalt grapes hanging from a leafy vine. In all, the decoration features a total of sixty-one grapes. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. The solid-topped design was probably used to prevent oxidation of the wine inside. Exceptional form with strong decoration. A 3" flake off base. Otherwise excellent condition. H 15 1/2".
