Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Nesting Bird Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA", circa 1865, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and flattened rim, decorated with a brushed cobalt design of a bird with solid wing, resting in a stylized nest. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. The size and form of the jar is unusual for bird decorations by this maker, as is the bird's nesting stance. Provenance: Robert Meltzer Collection. Very nice condition with two chips and minor nick to exterior of rim and some wear to interior of rim. H 7 3/4".
