Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Dated 1887, attributed to the Swank Family, Johnstown, PA, 1887, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-squared rim, and applied tab handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a sweeping tulip design in the Swank style. Brushed in cobalt with the date "1887" under one handle. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Relatively few dated examples of Swank family stoneware are known. Very nice condition with a handle chip, a minor rim chip, and some bubbling to cobalt.
