Exceptional Four-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Incised Floral Decoration, Manhattan, NY origin, circa 1800, large-sized, highly-ovoid jug with footed base and tooled spout, decorated with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a flower featuring alternating oval and pointed petals surrounding a bulls-eye center. Stem includes heavily-incised details and a scalloped leaf in the Manhattan style. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Outstanding decoration. One of the largest incised jugs we have ever offered. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor in the 1980s or 1990s. Heavy chipping to base. Otherwise excellent, essentially as-made condition. H 17 1/2".
