Fine and Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Bird-in-Wreath Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG . PA", circa 1865, semi-ovoid jug with tapered spout, decorated with a brushed cobalt design of a bird with spotted wing, nestled in the center of a wreath. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Desirable maker and crisp decoration with excellent color. Significantly rarer than the typical standing or perched bird designs produced by this partnership. A 5/8" spout chip and a few other minuscule spout nicks. A 1 1/4" chip to side of handle with adjacent horizontal hairline extending through handle. A shallow, 5/8" glazed-over flake to opposite side of handle.
