Outstanding and Rare One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Stenciled and Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Stenciled "D.F. HAYNES & CO. / CROWN BRAND / BALTIMORE, MD", Western PA origin, circa 1875, semi-ovoid pitcher with tall, flaring collar, tooled rim, and applied handle, the front featuring the stenciled advertising for "D.F. HAYNES / & CO. / CROWN BRAND / BALTIMORE, MD", surrounding a detailed crown with cross finial, between straight and wavy stripes. Right side of pitcher's front is additionally stenciled with a "1 1/2" beside a leaf-like flourish. Collar with profuse wavy stripe decoration girded between straight stripes at the rim and its base. Freehand dashes along spout. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. This wonderfully-decorated example is one of a few D.F. Haynes stoneware pitchers known. Very nice condition with a chip to spout, a minor chip to base of rim molding on reverse, and a faint hairline on underside. H 11".
