Outstanding and Rare Two-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Stenciled Star and Freehand Stripe Decoration, Stenciled "Stephen H. Ward. / West Brownsville. Pa", circa 1870, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded rim, featuring the large stenciled signature of West Brownsville potter, Stephen H. Ward, flanking a row of seven stenciled stars. Decorated below with a stenciled "2" above a freehand circle, flanked wavy stripes of cobalt. Additional straight cobalt stripes below rim and at base. Difficult-to-find maker's mark and striking decoration, which covers the jar's front. Excellent condition with two tiny nicks to shoulder molding and light staining.
