Outstanding and Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Cream Jar with Cobalt-Highlighted Bird Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG. PA", circa 1865, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a striking design of a heavily-brushed bird with large eye, long tail, and spotted wing, perched on a leafy branch. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. The heavy cobalt shading throughout the bird's body is a visually-appealing and highly-desirable detail rarely found on products from this pottery. A 5 1/2" hairline to side of jar, continuing 3 1/2" onto underside. Section of large, in-the-firing chips to bottom edge. Some light water glass staining to surface.
