Four-Gallon Stoneware Cream Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "N. CLARK, JR. / ATHENS, NY", circa 1840, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, flattened rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed tulip plant design featuring two blossoms. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Some small spot of fry to cobalt. Two hairlines and a thin crack from rim on reverse. Hairline extending from rim to shoulder area on front. Rim chips. 1 1/4" chipped area to one handle.
