Exceptional Five-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Elaborate Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "N. CLARK JR. / ATHENS, NY," circa 1860, large-sized, cylindrical jug with squared spout, decorated with a very large slip-trailed design of a bird with turned head perched on a flowering branch. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Imposing size to design with outstanding detail throughout, including scalloped lines decorating the body and heavy spotting throughout body and tail. Provenance: A recently-surfaced example, which was found decades ago in a dairy barn in the Adirondacks. Excellent, essentially as-made condition. H 18".
