Fine Glazed Redware Pitcher with Manganese Decoration, New England origin, possibly Bristol County, MA, late 18th or early 19th century, ovoid-bodied pitcher with footed base, short collar, and applied handle, decorated with heavy incised banding below the collar and at the rim. Surface decorated with splashes of manganese over a vibrant mottled orange ground and covered in a clear lead glaze. Exceptionally thin-walled construction and wonderful color. A 2" crack at base on reverse, which continues onto underside and forms a wide spider crack on the pitcher's front, ending at the rim to the left of the spout. This damage includes a 2 1/8" x 1 1/2" reglued piece at rim, adjacent to a 1 5/8" x 3/4" filled piece at rim. An additional filled flake on the rim is present on the opposite side of the spout, visible primarily on the interior of the rim. Chipping to base. H 8".
