Fine Four-Gallon Double-Handled Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Decoration, Stenciled "T.F. REPPERT. / SUCCESSOR TO / JAS. HAMILTON / & CO. / GREENSBORO, PA.," circa 1880, ovoid jug with tooled spout and applied handles at the shoulders, the midsection decorated with a crisply-stenciled shield bearing T.F Reppert maker's stenciling, flanked by stems with berries. Upper portion of jug with freehand graduated stripes. Base with freehand stripes and a stenciled "4" flanked by foliate accents. Cobalt highlights to upper handle terminals. Excellent form and decoration. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. A reglued 3/4" flake on interior of spout, a shallow, partially-filled 5/8" chip on reverse of spout, and a 1 1/2" hairline to spout on reverse.
