Fine Large-Sized "GR" Stoneware Jug with Brass Make-Do Handle, Westerwald, Germany origin, 18th century, ovoid jug with footed base and heavily-tooled collar, decorated with a large applied "GR" medallion surrounded by incised petals. Body of pitcher profusely decorated with incised flowering vines, including looped vine design at base. Heavy cobalt decoration throughout incising and additional manganese decoration to collar. Reverse with appealing antique make-do brass handle. Underside with incised cross-hatching. Shallow base chips, probably in-the-firing. 1 1/4" in-the-firing crack on underside, continuing as a tight glazed-over line 1" onto base. 3/4" hairline from rim on reverse. H 12".
