Scarce Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Rearing Horse Decoration, Stenciled "PALATINE POTTERY Co. / PALATINE / W VA," circa 1875, cylindrical jug with tooeld shoulder and spout, decorated with freehand cobalt stripes, an unusual band of freehand dashes, a stenciled rearing horse, two stenciled "2"'s , and a freehand stripe at base. A fine example of West Virginia stenciled stoneware. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, from a forty-year Delaware collection. Heavy chipping to spout. Otherwise excellent condition with a minor in-the-firing base chip and minor wear to shoulder molding.
