Extremely Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Pan with Cobalt Decoration, Stamped "G. & A. Black," Somerfield, PA, circa 1860, tapered vessel with squared rim and applied lug handles, decorted with a brushed tulip extending from a leafy stem on the front and reverse. Impressed with an inverted "G. & A. Black" maker's mark and a one-gallon capacity mark below one handle. The only signed example of this form by George and Albert Black we have seen. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, which descended in a Western PA family to the consignor. Several rim chips. Wear to handles, including a chip to one handle. Light surface wear. Three very minor, shallow base chips.
