Fine Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Profuse Cobalt Floral Decoration, Baltimore, MD origin, circa 1845, ovoid jar with squared rim and applied lug handles, cobalt-decorated with an elaborate clover plant design on the front, and a similarly-styled design on the reverse. Cobalt swags brushed under each handle. Molding on interior of rim allows jar to hold a lid. A very nice example. Crack on underside, which extends onto base, where it become a thin hairline. Shallow chip on side of rim. Small, in-the-firing chip on front of rim. A tight horizontal line in rim, with a few very short lines extending from it, upward to top of rim. Faint 3 1/4" hairline from rim on reverse. Small chips on interior of rim where a lid would rest.
