Very Rare Eight-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Baltimore, MD origin, circa 1870, massive-sized ovoid jar with heavily-tooled shoulder, squared rim, and applied lug handles, the front profusely-decorated with a large tulip plant, featuring six large blossoms extending from a leafy base. Reverse with large flowering vine design bearing three different types of flowers. Each handle underscored by a large tulip. Exceptional size and decoration. One of a small number of Baltimore stoneware pieces known with brushwork by a Harrisburg, PA decorator. Provenance: Recently found in Virginia. Rim chips. Shallow chip to end of one handle. Two shallow chips to edge on underside. Glazed-over base chip to front.
