Rare and Fine Four-Gallon Double-Handled Stoneware Jug, Stenciled "EXCELSIOR WORKS / Isaac Hewitt, Jr. / RICES LANDING, PA," circa 1875, semi-ovoid jug with wide, finely-tooled spout, and two applied lug handles, decorated with a delicately-brushed fuchsia design, along with freehand stripes and flourishes. Crisp Isaac Hewitt, Jr. maker's stenciling near base. A fine example of this desirable potter's work. Provenance: Consigned from Washington State. Spout chip. Two salt drips to front and an additional small salt drip to shoulder on reverse.
