Scarce One-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Stenciled "JAS. HAMILTON & CO. / GREENSBORO / Pa.," circa 1875, stylish form with rounded body and tall, flaring collar accented with a heavily-ribbed rim. Front stenciled "Jas. Hamilton / & Co. / Greensboro / Pa." underscored by a brushed cobalt stripe. Spout decorated with an unusual freehand design of a wavy vertical line flanked by dashes and thick cobalt stripes. A desirable Western PA form. Provenance: Tom McCandless Collection. Professional restoration to spout and 4" hairline to right of spout. Two minor handle nicks. H 10 1/4".
