Rare Ovoid Stoneware Jar with Impressed Leaf Decoration, Stamped "P. CROSS / HARTFORD," CT origin circa 1805, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, tall collar, and applied lug handles, impressed with the cobalt-highlighted mark "P. CROSS / HARTFORD" on shoulder of one side. Reverse impressed "HARTFORD" underscored by a highly unusual impressed leaf design. It appears that an actual leaf was impressed into the clay, leaving a finely-executed, slightly recessed design. A rare and desirable early New England maker. Highly unusual decorative technique. Jar broken into pieces and reglued, with a wedge missing on one side. Small base chips. One handle broken into two pieces and reglued. H 12".
