Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Man-in-the-Moon Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, straigth-sided jar with applied handles, rounded shoulder, and flared collar. Decorated with a long-nosed face framed on one side by a stem with numerous leaves. A desirable Cowden & Wilcox motif. Restored cracks on front. Restoration to flaking, touching some of decoration. 5 1/2" crack on one side, continuing onto underside and onto base area of opposite side, where it forms a 7" long T-shaped crack. 2 1/2" Y-shaped hairline under one handle. A few rim chips. One handle has a small stone ping with short circular line extending through it. H 11 3/4".
