Extremely Rare Stoneware Presentation Batter Bowl with Chicken Pecking Corn and Bird on Stump Decorations, Stamped "VANCORTLANDT / 1884," attributed to Brady & Ryan of Ellenville, NY or possibly Adam Caire of Poughkeepsie, NY, approximately one-half-gallon ovoid jar with pouring spout and applied handles. Decorated on one side with a slip-trailed chicken pecking corn with spotted body and up-swept tail and on the reverse with long-tailed bird perched on a tree stump. Impressed below rim with the name and date "VANCORTLANDT / 1884." This name likely refers to a member of New York State's prominent Vancortlandt family, which included several politicians and wealthy landowners. Exceptional in its size, form, and very rare two-sided decoration. Mint condition. H 5 1/4" ; Width (from rim to spout) 6 1/4".
