Salt-Glazed Stoneware Jar, attributed to Samuel Smith Pottery, Knox County, TN, circa 1820-1830, highly ovoid form with footed base, heavily tooled shoulder, and tall collar, the interior of the rim fitted with a flange to hold a lid. Clear salt-glazed surface. Incised slash to collar. Includes an unmarked salt-glazed lid that is possibly Smith, Jr., but is larger than the opening to the jar. Exhibited: Tennessee Turned, Earthenware and Stoneware Made in East Tennessee 1800-1900, Museum of East Tennessee History, May 16-October 30, 2011. Provenance: Carole Wahler Collection. Jar in excellent condition with traces of old paint. Lid in excellent condition with expected wear to edge on underside and a small glazed-over dent to edge. H (of jar) 7".
