Rare Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jug, Dated "1836," Stamped "SAMUEL STOUT," South River, NJ, 1836, ovoid jug with tapered spout, brush-decorated with the large date, "1836," above an abstract foliate motif. Heavy cobalt highlight to maker's mark and additional highlights to handle terminals. The finest example of Samuel Stout stoneware that we have ever offered, distinguished by its strong cobalt and bold date. Provenance: Purchased by the consignor approximately 15 years ago from John DeCaro (of Historical Glass International) in the NJ Pine Barrens. A recessed area to proper left side of jug. Horizontal surface cracks to shoulder area. A minor spout chip, probably in the firing. H 15".
