Exceptional Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Impressed Decoration, attributed to James Williams, Perry County, AL, circa 1850, squat-shaped, ovoid jar with vertical open handles and incised banding to midsection, shoulder, and rim, decorated around the body with rows of impressed chain links and paired leaves, including an impressed flower or star beside one handle. Surface covered in a streaky, olive-green alkaline glaze. Appealing form with striking decoration. Among the finest Alabama stoneware jars that we have ever offered. Rim chips. Minor base wear. H 7 3/4".
