Five-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Freehand Cobalt Decoration, attributed to the Boughner Pottery, Greensboro, PA, circa 1865, semi-ovoid jar with incised banding to midsection, tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with stripes and vining to the upper half, the bottom decorated with a freehand "5" surrounded by unusual graduated stripe motifs, underscored by stripes. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Excellent condition with some minor staining and a minor 1 1/4" in-the-firing surface fissure to underside, not visible on interior. H 15 1/4".
