Rare Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Canning Jar with Milton, WV Advertising, Western PA origin, circa 1880, tapering jar with rounded "wax sealer" rim, featuring the stenciled advertising, "A.J. KANE [GE]NERA[L] / MERCHANT. / MILTON. W. VA." Stenciled floral motif at center of advertising. Freehand stripes above and below. The first example of stoneware advertising this town that we have offered. A top-to-bottom crack on proper left side of jar, extending onto underside, where it forms a Y. A few rim chips. Nicks to inner rim for lid. Staining and some light wear to surface. An in-the-firing slump to rim. Parts of word, "GENERAL," absent. H 10".
