Very Rare Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Canning Jar with Rock Castle, WV Advertising, Western PA origin, circa 1880, tapering jar with semi-rounded "wax sealer" rim, featuring the stenciled advertising, "A.J. STEPHENS / DEALER IN / GENERAL M'D'SE. / NEAR / ROCK CASTLE. / W . VA ." Only the second piece featuring advertising for this town that we have offered. Provenance: Earl Bush Collection. Black marker notation from Bush Collection on underside. Three chips to rim. Heavy chipping to inner rim for lid. Thin cracks to body of jar. Light surface wear. Two small in-the-firing pings to reverse. An in-the-firing stone ping to shoulder. H 9 5/8".
