Very Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Stenciled Cobalt Tavern Scene, Stenciled "James Hamilton & Co / Greensboro, Pa.," circa 1875, ovoid jug with tooled spout, decorated with an elaborate stenciled design of three men drinking around a table. One figure depicted with stocking cap and arm resting over the back of the chair, another raises a bottle and glass, and a third falls backward clutching a glass and his feathered hat. One of a small group of James Hamilton jugs known bearing this iconic motif. Provenance: Recently surfaced in Ohio. A small spout chip. In-the-firing contact marks to shoulder. An in-the-firing contact mark to reverse. A small area of black residue to midsection on front. H 14".
