Very Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Cobalt Floral Decoration, attributed to the William Linton Pottery, Baltimore, MD, circa 1860, ovoid pitcher with flared base, tooled shoulder, and thin, semi-rounded rim, brush-decorated around the body with swag and hanging flower bud motifs. Additional swag decoration to collar and flanking the spout. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Extraordinary size. One of only a small group of four-gallon Baltimore stoneware pitchers known. Provenance: Purchased by the consignor decades ago in Ellicott City, MD. The oral history of this pitcher states that it was used in a hotel in Baltimore. Several thin cracks to collar. A minor in-the-firing ping to proper right edge of spout. A horizontal hairline through handle. Reverse with a minor base chip and a 5" diagonal line ascending base. A 1 1/8" base chip on front. H 15 1/2".
