Very Rare Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Canning Jar, Stamped "JHG," John Gilreath, Spartanburg, SC, late 19th century, tapering jar with flared rim, the surface covered in a dark-olive alkaline glaze. Impressed with large "JHG" stamp at base. The two marked Gilreath jars in this auction are the first that we have ever offered. Provenance: Found in the attic of David and Jongy Wards' circa 1835 home, The William Bates House, when they purchased it. This auction will likely mark the first time this jar has sold publicly since it was made. Excellent condition with some minor water glass to base. H 10 1/2".
