Rare and Fine Six-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Iron Slip Decoration, Stamped "TRAPP.& / CHANDLER," Reverend John Trapp and Thomas Chandler, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1848-1850, highly-ovoid jar with arched tab handles and narrow, flaring mouth with inner ledge to hold a lid, decorated on the front and reverse with slip-trailed iron slip drape motifs including rare placement of this motif encompassing the maker's mark. Further decorated below this design as well as under each handle with looping iron slip decoration. Olive-colored, alkaline-glazed ground with yellowish cast. Only the third marked Trapp & Chandler piece that we have offered, this recently surfaced work survives in exemplary condition and is the first example that we have seen with a decorative slip border around the stamp. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, which descended in a Southern family. Excellent condition. A tight 3" crack on underside, extending 1 1/2" up base on proper right side of jar. Small chips to exterior of rim. A small chip and minor wear to interior of rim. H 16 1/2".
