One-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Cobalt Floral Decoration, attributed to the Samuel Irvine Pottery, Newville, PA, circa 1865, ovoid pitcher with footed base and flaring collar with semi-squared rim, brush-decorated over slip-coated clay with a flower ascending the front, blossoms on each side, swags on the sides of the collar, and wavy stripes flanking the spout. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Professional restoration paint visible to much of the pitcher's body, extending onto foot and underside. A study of the interior indicates this restoration covers a thin, Y-shaped crack in underside and a second diagonal crack on the body. While the restoration extends further than these area, it possibly covers additional unknown flaws or damage to the surface. H 10 3/8".
