One-and-a-Half-Gallon Lidded Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "J. NORTON & CO / BENNINGTON VT.," circa 1860, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested bird perched on a stylized branch. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Provenance: William Bouck Collection. Some bubbling to cobalt. Small traces of old yellow and blue paint to exterior, including on cobalt. Traces of old yellow and blue paint to interior. A 5 1/2" inverted Y-shaped line to reverse. A Y-shaped surface line to underside, not visible on interior. A short in-the-firing line to far left side of jar's front. Includes salt-glazed lid. Lid warped, with two glazed-over chips, and does not fit, not original to the jar. H (excluding lid) 10 1/2".
