Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Rooster Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON VT," circa 1855, cylindrical crock with semi-rounded rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a rooster with turned head, standing on a stylized ground with shrubs. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. Desirable design, rarely found on pieces of this small size. Provenance: William Bouck Collection. A reglued 3 1/2" x 2 1/2" wedge on proper left side, including a large area of restoration along damage. An additional thin 3" crack descending from this damage on crock's left side. A curving crack from rim to shoulder on reverse. A 5/8" chip to interior of rim. Some restoration to rim. A small chip to proper left handle. A tiny nick to front at rooster's wing. Minor fry to base of decoration. H 7 1/4".
