Very Rare Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Face Wig Stand, Signed "Lanier Meaders," Cleveland, GA, circa 1970s-1980s, ovoid form with narrow opening and flaring base, decorated with a hand-modeled and applied clay face including kaolin eyes with black-slip pupils, incised eyelids and eyebrows, ears, a curved nose, a scalloped smiling mouth, and rounded chin. Original hole in underside, formed on the potter's wheel. Surface covered in a dark-olive alkaline glaze. Underside incised with Lanier Meaders signature. Among Meaders's rarest forms, this lot is the first wig stand by this potter that we have ever offered. Provenance: Daryl Barksdale; Frank W. White Collection. Excellent condition with a minor in-the-firing contact mark above proper left ear and a glaze scratch on reverse. H 12 1/8".
