Six-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Western PA origin, circa 1870, semi-ovoid jar with incised banding to midsection, tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, brush-decorated from top to bottom with freehand stripes, a large flowering vine above another vine, and a freehand "6" surrounded by spots, flanked by vining. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. A 4 1/4" X-shaped line in underside, not visible on interior. A 1 3/4" Y-shaped surface line to interior of rim. Light wear to rim. Some in-the-firing mottling to surface. Staining to surface. A small chip to shoulder molding on reverse. Some surface wear to reverse. H 16 3/4".
