One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "J. NORTON & CO. / BENNINGTON VT:," circa 1860, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large floral spray accented with spots. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Provenance: William Bouck Collection. An in-the-firing contact mark to proper left side of jar and reverse, including some small in-the-firing surface chips. An approximately 5" x 3 1/2" surface X-shaped line to reverse, not visible on interior. A Y-shaped line to interior on underside, extending a short distance onto base, not visible on exterior base and only visible as two short lines on the exterior base. Minor wear to cobalt. H 9 1/2".
