Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Deer Scene, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON VT.," circa 1855, semi-ovoid jug with semi-squared spout, decorated with an elaborate slip-trailed scene of a deer with spotted body and turned head, reclining on a hill between a pine tree and shrub, with large mansion in the distance and split-rail fence in the foreground. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Provenance: Cathy Treffeisen Collection. Areas of oversalting to decoration. Staining to surface. A stained spot of jug's proper left side includes an approximately 7/8" x 3/16" filled spot. A 1 1/2" line on underside, extending 1 3/4" up reverse. H 15 3/4".
