Scarce Three-Gallon NH Stoneware Advertising Jar with Cobalt Pheasant Scene, attributed to J. & E. Norton, Bennington, VT, circa 1855, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested pheasant with turned head, perched on a tree stump beside two split-rail fences and a pine tree. Impressed at shoulder with faint New Hampshire merchant advertising, which appears to have been partially carved away by the potter. Perhaps this jar was erroneously stamped. Cobalt accent to capacity mark. Unusual rendering of decorator John Hilfinger's pheasant motif incorporating two fences. Provenance: Cathy Treffeisen Collection. Slightly recessed area on front. A few chips to interior of rim. Chipping around inner rim for lid. Some light staining around base area. Three circular marks on underside from the stacking of smaller vessels during the firing. H 13 1/2".
