Extremely Rare Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Rooster Decoration, Dated 1840, probably J.W. Ingell, Taunton, MA, 1840, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and wide opening, decorated on one side with a boldly-brushed rooster atop a series of wavy stripes. Reverse inscribed "1840" in cobalt. Figural-decorated stoneware from this pottery is essentially non-existent. Heavy chipping to interior of rim. A few chips to exterior of rim. A large spider crack to jar's proper left side. A 5 1/2" crack from rim on reverse. A 2" crack on underside, forming a wide 4 1/4" Y-shaped crack on jar's reverse. A 1/2" surface line on underside, extending 1" up front of jar, not visible on interior. A 1 5/8" in-the-firing chip to underside at edge including some minor chipping. H 9 1/2".
