Very Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Newtown, MD Advertising and Cobalt Clover Decoration, Stamped "P. HERRMANN," Baltimore, MD origin, circa 1870, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, squared rim, and applied lug handles, impressed on one side with the cobalt-highlighted advertising, "FROM / DICKINSON MERRILL & DRYDEN / DEALERS IN DRY GOODS / GROCERIES &C / NEWTOWN MD." Reverse brush-decorated with a large, two-stemmed clover plant and impressed with a Peter Herrmann four-gallon capacity mark. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. The advertising for this jar refers to Newtown, MD, located in Worcester County on Maryland's Eastern Shore. Incorporated in 1865 it was renamed Pocomoke City in 1878. The unusual size, large decoration, and Herrmann signature, place this jar among the finest Eastern Shore of Maryland advertising pieces to come to auction in years. Staining throughout.
